Discovering the Beauty and Local Wisdom of Sipijena and Wolofeo Villages at the Foot of Mount Kelimutu

Sipijena and Wolofeo are two charming villages located in Detusoko Subdistrict, Ende Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. These villages differ in size—Sipijena covers about 9.87 hectares, while Wolofeo spans approximately 975 hectares. Sitting at an elevation of 678 meters above sea level, both villages enjoy a tropical climate with average temperatures ranging from 26°C to 30°C. This warm and fertile environment supports the livelihood of most residents as farmers.

The local people cultivate various crops such as corn, rice, legumes, and a variety of horticultural plants. Interestingly, many of these crops are local varieties passed down from generation to generation. In addition to farming, residents also raise livestock. Their harvests are often sold at traditional markets in and around the area.

Easy to Reach and Rich in Cultural Heritage

Getting to Sipijena and Wolofeo is very convenient. The villages are located along the Transflores Highway and lie on the route to the iconic Kelimutu Lake. These villages not only offer stunning natural beauty but also a wealth of local wisdom that remains deeply rooted in the community. For the people here, farming is more than just a source of income—it is a calling to honor their ancestral heritage and preserve the land’s fertility. The spirit of gotong royong (community cooperation) is still very much alive, embraced by both the older and younger generations.
