Fostering Community-Based Ecotourism Development Through Capacity Building in North Misool, Malaumkarta, and Werur  (Bird Head Seascape, North West Papua)

The project aims to enhance the capacity of local tourism groups at three Regencies at the Bird Head Seascape, North West Papua Province. The project is funded by Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN). For the past few years, a participatory approach has been implemented to increase community participation and to improve management of coastal habitats and aquatic natural resources, as well as promoting sustainable alternative income. Community-based ecotourism business groups have a significant role in community economic growth, but still has very limited knowledge about tourism and tourism products.  Capacity building is implemented through a combination of training series. It is expected that local community groups will be able to manage their business more efficiently, improve the quality of the products or services they offer, understand market dynamics and existing business opportunities.

Project Component

  1. Rapid assessment on the destinations’ tourism potentials, facilities, and accesibility; as well as on potential market segment
  2. Training series on attraction management, tour product development, and ecotourism guiding
  3. Short term coaching for tour operation and data collection
  4. Development of safety procedures, tour products, and guide book for local tour guides

Malaumkarta Raya (Sorong Regency), Werur Raya (Tambraw Regency), and North Misool (Raja Ampat Regency)

Output

Output to date (Desember 2024) include:

  1. Report on Tourism Profile, Management Organization, and Tourism Market (Malaumkarta, Werur, and North Misool)
  2. Safety procedure and environmental-friendly guidelines for ecotourism packages developed by local community groups (Malaumkarta and Werur)
  3. Guide Book on Guiding and Interpretation for Malaumkarta Raya, Kabupaten Sorong
  4. Guide Book on Guiding and Interpretation for Werur Raya, Kabupaten Tambraw
